Audacity 1.3 Update Adds Features for Podcasting

[synthtopia.com reports ]A new version of the free audio editor Audacity has been announced. A beta version is available, but it is not considered stable yet.

The software is popular with musicians and podcasters looking for a free, open source audio editing environment. Several features will be especially interesting for podcasters, including FTP uploading, transcription tools and batch processing.

* Transcription toolbar - A new toolbar for creating transcriptions of speech in Label Tracks. Includes features that enable you to change the playback speed, create labels automatically based on onsets, and more. To enable this feature, go to the Interface tab of the Preferences.

Pod Safe - Charity MP3 Promo

I have a 130 second promo for a charity bike ride in March which I am trying to air for free on Irish Podcasts from Dec 13^th to Jan 30^th 2006.

If you are inclined to allow 2 mins space at the end middle or anywhere in your podcasts for an Irish charity please consider including it.

Phantom FM Podcast goes top ten in iTunes

The new soon to be 'rock' radio station from Dublin are podcasting pre broadcast. The rss feed is at http://phantomfm.libsyn.com/rss

Launched late Monday night its gone into the iTunes top ten in Ireland (Ricky Gervais is #1), for the moment there is some talk shows that will fill the feed, 'The Two Petes Talk Rubbish' sits very well in the podcast arena, but the rock station will come into its own when they are playing rock music in the podcast. This station has a huge following in Dublin and its on air debut is eagerly awaited. But for now you can hear the lads again, via rss and an MP3 player. doop.ie welcome the podcast debut and look forward to working with phantom fm and their future podcast offerings.

Podcast is 2005 Word of the Year

The editors of the New Oxford American Dictionary have selected “podcast” as the Word of the Year for 2005. The word beat out such runners-up as “bird flu” and “IED” (improvised explosive device).

Other tech-related runners-up included “ICE” (an entry stored in one’s cellular phone that provides emergency contact information), “lifehack” (a more efficient or effective way of completing an everyday task), and “rootkit” (software installed on a computer by someone other than the owner, intended to conceal other programs or processes, files or system data.)

Podcast, which is to be defined as “a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the Internet for downloading to a personal audio player,” will be added to the next online update of the dictionary, due in early 2006.

The word was chosen based on its phenomenal rapid growth in 2005, which saw it grow from relative obscurity to one of the hottest trends in media. Erin McKean, the dictionary’s editor-in-chief, noted that the word was considered for inclusion in the dictionary last year, but ultimately rejected as it was not in wide-enough usage.

“This year it’s a completely different story,” McKean said in a statement. “The word has finally caught up with the rest of the iPod phenomenon.”

Indie music available to podcasters

Songs by acts signed to UK indie record labels are to be made available to podcasters on a trial basis.

The Association of Independent Music is selling six-month worldwide licence deals for its members' music to be used on download radio programmes.

Podcasters will buy licences to access a fixed list of labels' music. Commercial broadcasters will pay an additional percentage of their revenue.

Acts signed to UK indie labels include Franz Ferdinand and The Prodigy.

Previously, few podcasters were able to get licences to use copyrighted material, forcing them to either use copyright-free songs or remove all music from podcasts.

The workshops are aimed at commuity organisations, independent producers and invividuals who are interested in a television station owned and controlled by the people of Dublin. You may have a lot of experience in media or none at all. The themes laid down by the BCI are open to wide interpretation and all of Dublin’s communities both new and old are urged to attend.
