14M iPods sold in Q4

RTÉ business reports
Apple Computer chief executive Steve Jobs says the company sold a record 14 million iPod music players in the fourth quarter, a leap from 4.5 million in the same period of 2004.

Jobs, speaking last night at the company's Macworld exhibition in San Francisco, said that total included eight million of the new video iPods launched on October 12. The number of iPods sold far exceeded the 1.25 million Macintosh computers sold in the same quarter.

The Apple chief also said the company had revenues of $5.7 billion for the quarter to the end of December, higher than the $5 billion expected by analysts.

Apple also unveiled a new remote control device featuring an FM radio for its iPod players. The iPod Radio Remote, which includes a pair of Apple headphones with a shorter cable, will be available immediately.
